Gazprom relentlessly declares its commitment to the principles of sustainable development, which means a balanced and socially acceptable combination of economic growth and preservation of a favorable environment for future generations.

In 2021 the general expenses of Gazprom Group on environmental protection in the Russian Federation in relation to 2020 increased practically twice and exceeded 97.5 billion rubles. In particular, on protection and rational use of water resources 9.1 billion rubles were directed (from them 7.8 billion — on construction of treatment facilities and systems of reverse water supply); on protection of atmospheric air – 36.5 billion rubles; on protection and rational use of lands – 13.6 billion rubles; on protection and reproduction of fish stocks – 183.8 million, on installations on utilization, neutralization and grounds on placement of waste – 703.8 million rubles, on protection and rational use of the woods — 249 million rubles.

Last year Gazprom put into operation 82 installations and constructions for sewage treatment with a general power of 64.4 thousand cubic meters/day, 12 installations for catching and neutralization of harmful substances from the 87.8 thousand cubic meters/hour flue gases, 6 installations on neutralization and the 10.5 thousand tons recycling in a year, 5 systems of the 225.7 thousand cubic m/days reverse water supply.

Air

In 2021 gross emissions of the polluting substances in atmospheric air from stationary sources of the companies of Gazprom Group made 2506.3 thousand tons that is insignificant above an indicator of 2020 (2445.7 thousand tons), but is significantly lower than in 2019 (2862.7 thousand tons). The increase in emissions was caused by growth of operational performance.
On installations of purification of flue gases last year 1147 thousand tons of the polluting substances were caught and neutralized. They are: hydrocarbons (including methane), carbon oxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide. Emissions of strong substances are characteristic for a power segment of Gazprom, emissions of volatile organic compounds — for the companies of Gazprom Neft Group and the enterprises of gas business.

The significant contribution to decrease in emissions is made by implementation of energy saving projects on the basis of the advanced technologies directed on preservation of natural gas at repairs. One of the most effective modern technologies of prevention of the emissions of natural gas arising at traditional methods of repair — use of the mobile compressor stations (MCS). By preparation for repair work by means of MCS the main volume of gas from the disconnected site of the gas pipeline is pumped over in the operating site or in a parallel thread. Thus hit in the atmosphere to 80% of methane is excluded. Thanks to application of MCS for 2021 drain in the atmosphere of 744.7 million cubic meters of natural gas was prevented. Last year the MCS project realized by the company of a special purpose — JSC Gazprom MCS, reached full design capacity and used 10 MCS.

Associated oil gas

Gazprom’s activities to reduce (stop) flaring of associated petroleum gas (APG) are of great importance for reducing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, as well as resource conservation. In the conditions of global tendencies on transition of economy to a low-carbon and power effective way of development taking into account economic losses and environmental risks prevention of burning of APG is very actual.

The implementation of investment projects for the use of APG in the fields of the Gazprom Group pursues the goal of achieving the level of APG use of at least 95% in accordance with the requirements of the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of November 8, 2012. In 2021 the indicator of the useful use of APG in the fields of gas producing subsidiaries of PJSC Gazprom (including JSC Gazprom Dobycha Tomsk) was 99.1%, Sakhalin Energy — 97.5%. For Gazprom Neft Group actual indicator for operating assets last year was 89.5%. Thus the actual growth of volumes of production of APG made 3.9 billion cubic meters (+22%). The investment projects realized in ten years promote development by Gazprom Neft Group of various directions of use of gas. Among them are transportation and delivery of APG on gas-processing plants, in the Uniform System of Gas Supply (USGS), processing, generation thermal and the electric power for ensuring own needs, downloading in a gas cap for maintenance of reservoir pressure.

For the last five years the realized portfolio of drafts of the gas program of Gazprom Neft Group allowed to provide increase in useful use of APG by 13.3%. Key factors of growth of this indicator are effective management of material streams and the equipment, start of new infrastructure objects. In particular, Gazprom Neft created installation on division of APG into useful fractions. The equipment not only provides commercialization of all views received in the course of production of hydrocarbons but also of 7% reduces emissions of carbon dioxide. The first technological complex is successfully tested and is operated in the Orenburg region.

Water use

Gazprom Group companies strive to reduce the negative impact, including by reducing water consumption for production needs and reducing wastewater discharge into surface water bodies. During 2017-2021 in Gazprom Group the water consumption for production needs was reduced by 16% and water intake from natural sources — for 18%.

In 2021, Gazprom Group carried out a number of environmental measures aimed at improving the efficiency of water use for industrial and household needs, as well as to increase the degree of wastewater treatment. 82 wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity of 64.4 thousand cubic meters/ day were put into operation.

During 2017-2021 Moscow Refinery of Gazprom Neft Group cut water consumption more than on 13 million cubic meters thanks to work of biological treatment facilities Biosphere. This complex clears industrial water, rain and storm drains with efficiency to 99.9% and allows reusing them in a production cycle. Gazprom Neft finishes construction of the Biosphere complex on Omsk Refinery. It is planned that the object will start working in the second half of the current year. Thanks to Biosphere Omsk Refinery will be able to pass to almost closed cycle of water consumption and to reduce a water intake by 6 million cubic meters a year.

Waste treatment

In 2021 in the companies of Gazprom Group 3046.6 thousand tons of waste (that is 6% less than an indicator of 2020) was formed. The most part of production wastes (97%) belongs to categories low-dangerous and almost harmless (IV, V classes of danger). During 2017-2021 volumes of formation of waste in Gazprom Group decreased by 26%.

The bulk of the Gazprom Group’s waste is represented by ash and slag waste from Gazprom Energoholding (solid products of coal combustion generated at thermal power plants), drilling waste and oil sludge, which are mainly formed at oil and gas production and processing facilities. Last year six installations on neutralization, recycling with a general power of 10.5 thousand tons a year were started on objects of Gazprom Neft Group.

Land use

As a result of carrying out by Gazprom Group of prospecting, construction and repair work, and also operation of wells, pipelines and other objects there is an impact on a vegetable and soil cover. Gazprom constantly pays attention to the practical solution of questions of protection and restoration of the broken lands. The works on technical and biological recultivation directed on restoration of efficiency and economic value of the broken lands, preservation of landscapes are performed. In Gazprom Group complex actions for increase of reliability of pipeline systems are realized that positively influences preservation of environment.

Last year the companies of the Group broke 19.8 thousand hectares of lands that is 17% less than in 2020. On lands where works are completely finished, recultivation is executed. In 2021 there were rekultivated 17.2 thousand hectares of lands.

Energy efficiency and energy saving

Energy efficiency increase is one of priority tasks which provide technological development of PAO Gazprom, the tool for restriction of potentially negative impacts connected with climate change allowing to consolidate economic efficiency of activity.

In 2021 in connection with growth of the main operational performance (the volume of the transported gas — for 12%, production volume — for 7%) total consumption of energy resources for own technological needs of PAO Gazprom made 66.2 million tons of conditional fuel. The indicator of specific consumption of natural gas and the electric power for own technological needs (during the comparable work) following the results of a year made 28.34 kg conditional fuel/million cubic meters on 1 km.

The total size of economy of the fuel and energy resources (FER) for own technological needs made 4799.1 thousand tons of conditional fuel (about 18 billion rubles), including natural gas — 4 billion cubic meters (15.8 billion rubles), electric power – 377.8 million kW · h (1.6 billion rubles), thermal energy – 185.8 thousand Gcal (179.8 million rubles), motor fuel and fuels and lubricants — 17 thousand tons of conditional fuel (417.5 million rubles). The main share in economy of FER – 72.3% — is the share of the main transport of gas.
Increase of power efficiency of productions is provided due to development within the corporate program of research and developmental works of new technologies and technical solutions with their subsequent introduction on objects of ESG.

In particular, in JSC Gazprom Transgaz Kazan the skilled ejector of pumping of gas from processing equipment on CS «Arskaya» is installed. During tests of the ejector the volume of the kept gas made about 72% of the volume of the gas pitted in the atmosphere at gas pumping unit stop. In February, 2021 in Shemordan Linear Product Department of Main Gas Pipelines (JSC Gazprom Transgaz Kazan) acceptance tests of the two-level jet ejector of system of pumping of gas from the equipment of the compressor shop were carried out. This technology will allow keeping to 360 thousand CBM of natural gas from compressor shop of CS Arskaya stopped for carrying out repair. The program for introduction of technology of ejection of gas on CS in which experience of introduction of this technology will be generalized will become result of carrying out of research and objects of introduction are defined. Potential of decrease in drain of gas as a result of application of this technology is estimated at depletion of a contour of the supercharger at gas pumping units’ stops — at the level of 34 million cubic meters annually, at drain of gas from a gas binding of compressor shop — at the level of 59 million cubic meters a year.

Gasification

Natural gas is the most effective source of available and reliable energy for providing a sustainable development of our country. Expansion and improvement of systems of gas supply and gasification of regions is one of large-scale and socially significant areas of work of PAO Gazprom in domestic market. This work promotes social and economic development of the Russian regions, improvement of quality of life of the population.

Due to gasification of regions in 2021 reduction of emissions of 1.1 million tons CO2-equivalent was provided. Last year in Russia about 50% of total amount of the electric power were developed on gas thermal power plants. Natural gas has the lowest carbon intensity in comparison with other fossil energy resources and can make an essential contribution to power transition. Increase of a share of natural gas in power balance of the country influences decrease in carbon intensity of the Russian fuel and energy complex (FEC) in general. According to the Russian Government Analytical Centre, the energy industry of Russia has one of the lowest indicators of carbon intensity among large world economy.

Gasification of regions promotes development of the market of gas motor fuel (GMT) and decrease in negative impact of transport sector on climate. Expansion of use of GMT is important for development of economy and ecological wellbeing of the Russian regions; increases of economic and ecological efficiency of transport; attraction of investments and means of the federal budget, updating of passenger structure; control of growth of tariffs for journey in public transport, improvements of an economic situation of transport companies, busy in passenger and freight transportation.

In 2021 the volume of realization and shipment of the compressed natural gas (CNG) from objects of the companies of Gazprom Group (including JSC Gazprom Gas Motor Fuel) in the territory of Russia made 947.6 million cubic meters. In 2022 it is planned to increase the volume of shipment of KPG to 1.1 billion cubic meters. Transfer of transport to natural gas allowed preventing last year 410 thousand tons of CO2-equivalent emissions.

Preservation of biodiversity

The care of preservation of biodiversity, habitats of the rare and being under the threat of disappearance species of plants and animals is an important link in nature protection activity for Gazprom. Prevention of negative impact on marine and land ecosystems is an initial condition of implementation of projects of corporation.

In 2021 702.7 million rubles were directed on the purposes of preservation of biodiversity and protection of natural territories, protection and reproduction of fish stocks. More than 31.5 million various fishes including especially valuable types were let out.
