Growth of deliveries / by Sergey Pravosudov, Director of “The National Energy Institute” / 05.10.2025
Gazprom provides reliable supply of natural gas — an effective and eco-friendly power source — to domestic and foreign consumers.
In Russia, natural gas acts as a key element of fuel and energy balance and makes life of people of more comfortable, helps development of the industry, agriculture, transport and municipal spheres.
In 2024 Gazprom Group realized 361.7 billion cubic meters of gas (in 2023 — 342 billion cubic meters). Net revenue from gas sales (net of excise taxes, VAT, customs duties and payments due to the Russian Federation under the production sharing agreement) amounted to 4,128.6 billion rubles (3,124.8 billion rubles in 2023). Increase in net sales revenue is mainly due to the consolidation of Sakhalin Energy LLC’s performance, as a result of gaining control over its operations and increasing the volume of gas sold.
The main consumers of natural gas in Russia are producers of power and heat, oil industry, the population, the household sector, the gas industry, metallurgy and agrochemical industry.
The gain of volume of supply of pipeline gas of Gazprom Group, greatest in absolute expression, to the foreign markets was shown by China, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Supply of gas to China on main gas pipeline Force of Siberia continued to increase according to contractual obligations. Following the results of 2024 31.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas were delivered that is 36.9% more than in 2023. Thanks to the increase in supplies via the Power of Siberia pipeline, Russia has become the largest natural gas supplier to China for the first time in history.
Growth of deliveries to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan first of all is caused by expansion of cooperation with the countries of Central Asia. Since October, 2023, supply of the Russian natural gas to consumers of Uzbekistan on the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline began in the reverse mode.
Within the XXVII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June, 2024, contracts for delivery of the Russian natural gas for consumers of Kyrgyzstan since 2025 were signed long-term (till 2040).
Net proceeds from sale of crude oil, gas condensate and oil and gas processing products in 2024 were 5,108.3 billion rubles (in 2023 — 4,111.6 billion rubles).
Gazprom Group in 2024 realized 36.2 million tons of crude oil and stable gas condensate (in the 2023rd — 28.1 million tons) and 68.7 million tons of oil and gas processing products (in 2023 — 67.6 million tons).
The electric energy made by the Russian generation companies of the Group last year generally was implemented in the Russian wholesale electricity market on a competitive basis.
In 2024 the net proceeds from sale of electric and thermal energy of Gazprom Group (minus VAT) were 672.7 billion rubles (in 2023 — 644.6 billion rubles). Increase in proceeds from sales is connected with growth of volumes and the sales prices of the electric power in Russia.
In 2024, the weighted average selling price on the day-ahead market increased by 14% for the generating subsidiaries of Gazprom Group. Factors of growth of the price became indexation of wholesale prices for gas for industrial consumers for 11.2% about July 1, 2024 and increase in demand in the European part of Russia and in the Urals for 2%, including due to growth of an hourly average overflow by 0.2 GW in the direction of new regions.
Growth of consumption of natural gas in the world was 100 billion cubic meters (+2.4%) in comparison with indicators of 2023. The greatest gain of consumption of gas in 2024 was observed in the Asia-Pacific region (APR) — mainly due to increase in consumption of gas in China (+32 billion cubic meters). In India in 2024 the significant increase in demand for gas was also noted — on 7 billion cubic meters (+10.2%). It is expected that the APR will keep in the long term the role of the largest world power center.
According to preliminary estimates, following the results of 2024 the consumption of natural gas in the countries of Central Asia exceeded 110 billion cubic meters, the volume of commodity gas production was about 150 billion cubic meters. In the winter of 2023/2024, Gazprom PJSC ensured gas supplies to Uzbekistan at the maximum technical capacity level via the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline through Kazakhstan. Deliveries of PJSC Gazprom to the region in the long term will contribute to the dynamic development of economies of Central Asia countries.
Following the results of 2024 consumption of gas in Europe owing to its sharp increase in the IV quarter remained at the level of 2023. At the same time in three last years consumption of gas in the region dropped more than by 100 billion cubic meters. System mistakes in power policy were the reason of it, including politically motivated decisions on refusal of the Russian gas. Such actions led to increase in prices for gas and the electric power, falling of production in a number of the power-intensive industries to the level of 2008-2009.
In 2023-2024, there was a downward trend in interest in renewable energy (RES) projects from a number of large energy and investment companies. Many of them announced the refusal of risky and remunerative projects on development of RES, reconsidered climatic strategy and the purposes in the field of renewable power announced earlier and also increased investments into exploration and production of oil and gas. Despite this, the oil and gas industry continues to be underinvested, which generally increases the risks associated with energy security.
Increase in attention to questions of energy security as at the level of the states, and the large energy companies becomes the key trend influencing forecasts of long-term development of energy markets. This trend was shown in change of energy strategies of various countries, introduction of tax benefits for the oil and gas sector, construction of gas power plants, introduction of regulatory measures for increase in levels of loading of objects of gas infrastructure, refusal of unprofitable projects of renewable power.
The shift in energy policy priorities from unconditional support for renewable energy to unconditional energy security confirms that, despite the ongoing crisis and high level of uncertainty in global energy markets, fossil fuels will remain the backbone of the global energy mix in the long term. At the same time the role of natural gas will continue to grow in a world energy balance at any realistic scenario of development of power. For emerging markets natural gas will remain the most attractive energy resource thanks to a combination of reliability, usability, profitability and ecological advantages.
The power systems which are based on consumption of natural gas within long-term contract relationship proved the stability in the long term that is especially valuable in the conditions of turbulence in the world energy markets.
In the long term, the Asian market is expected to experience steady growth in energy consumption, particularly natural gas. The key role in increase in energy consumption, including gas consumption, will be played by China. In the long term in the country the maintaining high growth rates of consumption of gas which will be followed by increase in volumes of its import is predicted.
In Europe consumption of gas in the long term, on the contrary, will continue to be reduced. Rates of decrease will depend on further political solutions and volume of the financial resources directed to their realization. One of the factors determining the future volume of gas consumption in Europe is the possibility of domestic production, but given the depletion of the region’s resource base, there is no expectation of long-term growth in gas production.
